I place Hunter’s belongings neatly in the bag and head out of my room. It’s time to make sure everything’s ready, and I have to face Mrs. Mason.

Aiden’s already waiting for me. We might’ve had our fair share of crappy moments, but he’s the one person I can count on now that Hunter is gone.

On the drive over to the coroner, my body tenses to the point where it borders on painful. When Aiden parks in front of the funeral home, I sit and stare at the building for a good ten minutes, trying to control the tremor in my usually steady hands. No training in the world can prepare you for having to bury your best friend.

Dragging my ass out of the car, I’m thankful Aiden’s here and not someone who would try to talk my ear off. He understands that I need silence.

“I’ll wait by the car for you. Take your time,” Aiden says.

I nod and then head inside the building. I feel sick as I walk to the room Hunter is in. Closing the door behind me I turn to face Hunter’s casket. There won’t be a viewing during the funeral, and this room is so Mrs. Mason and I can say our goodbyes to Hunter in private.

I place the bag with Hunter’s personal items on the table. My heartbeat speeds up as I move forward, taking slow steps toward Hunter. Folding the flag back, my hands begin to shake as I open the top part of the casket. I look up at the ceiling, not quite ready to see Hunter.

“Fuck, one bullet, man! We were supposed to grow old together. How could you leave me?” I whisper hoarsely, because the pain is too intense, suffocating the air from my lungs. It feels as if I’m being sucked under by the quicksand in my gut.

I drop to one knee and press my forehead against the coffin. My fingers dig into the polished wood, and I wish I could cry so I can find some kind of relief.

“Damn, it hurts missin’ you,” I whisper.

Taking a deep breath, I pull myself up. I lay Hunter’s belongings out, one item at a time. I make sure they are perfectly spread on the table before I brace myself.

The hold on my lungs tightens as I turn to face the casket, and the air comes out in a long hiss.

I take in the pale face of the man I shared my every breath with. His blonde hair is cut in the exact same brush cut style as mine.

I’ll never see his eyes again.

I’d give anything to see his cocky grin again.

“I fuckin’ love you, Hunter Mason. Shit, I love you more than anythin’. I’d give my life to bring you back,” I whisper brokenly. I never told him the words. I always assumed he knew how I felt.

The door behind me opens, and I can’t bring myself to turn around.

“Cole,” Mrs. Mason’s soft voice ripples over me. It’s like the ripples on the lake.
